Coincidently, on this day 24 years ago, the ICC Cricket World Cup paid a visit to Stan Hargreaves Oval. On the 7th October 1999 the VCA organised a regional tour of the Trophy, won by Steve’ Waugh’s Australian Team at Lords by 8 wickets over Pakistan. That World Cup Carnival produced Australia losing its first three matches, before winning its next five to qualify for the Semi Finals, the alleged “you’ve just dropped the World Cup” sledge from Steve Waugh to Herschelle Gibbs, the Tied Semi Final at Edgbaston, between Australia and South Africa featuring some S.K. Warne magic and that Run Out and ended with a domination in the Final by Australia over Pakistan. Four months later VCA Regional Cricket Manager @Rohan Larkin Cricket Coaching brought the World Cup to the Victoria Park Sports Pavilion for a huge gathering of people to see and hold the Holy Grail. The 1999 edition was the first time that this version of the World Cup Trophy was awarded, with all previous Trophies specially designed by the host nation for each World Cup. The ICC has now awarded this version of the World Cup Trophy, which has become iconic, for the last eight CWC Carnivals. For the record, Australia has claimed Five ODI World Cups since the tournament began in 1975.
